Preparing for Drum Corps- Colorguard Edition

Image
With the past and upcoming tryouts for the 2019 drum corps season in motion, I thought this post would be a great one that most of my friends could relate to. Preparing pre tour for drum corps is essential for a better experience with your corps, in my opinion, not everyone thinks so, but I bet you will after this post.                     When I say preparing I mean very specific things, not just raising money or gathering items for tour, or even the infamous packing for tour. What I mean is preparing your body, preparing your skills and most importantly preparing your mind. One of the top reasons members leave within the first few weeks of tour, besides injuries, is mental stability. And that is totally okay, never feel like if that has happened to you that it was the wrong decision because you need to take care of your body and ...

Personal Growth

Personal Growth; activities that improve awareness and identity, develop talents and potential, build human capital and facilitate employ-ability, enhance the quality of life and contribute to the realization of dreams and aspirations.

If you want to feel set free, if you want to feel unrestrained, if you want to feel peace and calmness about everything in your life, you have to grow. If you keep living your life as it is, still feeling the way you do, and not changing anything, then that is insane. That is literally the textbook definition of insanity. Change something, grow something, change yourself, grow yourself.

I have actually caught myself doing this a lot recently, and I will by no means have anyone call me insane. So here are somethings I am doing to personally grow as a human being and stay sane.

1. FINISHING THINGS I'VE STARTED
Whether this be a book, a Netflix show, or a project. I am finishing it. I have a whole list. It may even take me a year to complete it all as I have 2 and a half jobs. Working at finishing these things is the goal, because as long as I am working towards the end and keeping my brain working, then it is growing. Also, keeping your brain busy, specifically if you have a tendency to overthink situations, can help your mind stay focused on whats important in your life and keep your mind away from what will never even matter in 10 years.

TIP: Write your own list of unfinished projects, then write a list of at least 5 things that are important in your life. This means things that could effect you being successful in the future. We do not want to focus on things that are like band aids, meaning they only hurt(effect) us for like five seconds once they are ripped off.

2. GETTING RID OF THE PEOPLE THAT CAUSE ME STRESS AND NEGATIVITY
If you are already feeling constrained by your life and emotions, why are you going to let people make it worse? If they really cared about you or were really your friends, they would help build you up and understand your problems and adversaries. I have gone through my contacts, Instagram followers, snap chat people and Facebook friends. If they have caused me any stress or negativity or post things I do not like to see, I unfriend them. It really is a lot more simple than you think. Trust me, following 50 people you enjoy seeing everyday is a lot better than trying to follow 50,000 random people.

3. EXERCISING
If you know me personally, then you know I have been doing this one for quite a while. I use to be so religious about it, and then I sort of fell off when I moved to Kentucky. Moving to a completely new state takes a lot of adjustments and I think I am finally getting back on track and can finally be "religious" about working out again. It really is good for the mind, body, and soul. Working out does not even have to include going to the gym. You could do home workouts, yoga, running or anything that gets the blood pumping. It relieves stress, and again keeps your mind moving and growing.

TIP: If you are new to working out, start running, or even walking. Do it at least 4 times a week. Once you establish a routine, and you are committed to it on the days you have set forth, start branching out and experimenting with different ways of exercising till you find one that works for you and your life.

4. BREATHING
I am very guilty of this. I never stop and breath. I never stop and think. I jump to conclusions and I over think EVERYTHING. I overthink things that would make no absolute sense if I listed them. When you are taking in a lot of new information or stressful information or information you really do not want to hear at that time, it is so so so important to stop and breath. The mind is a powerful thing and if not used correctly, can cause irreversible damage.

TIP: Try some breathing and meditation for at least 5 minuets a day. There are plenty of free apps for phones and watches that can even remind when each day to do your meditation. I am implementing this everyday, first thing when I wake up.

5. LOVING MORE
I am taking the time to love more. If someone does something irritating to me, or says something rude, or cuts me off while I am going down the road, I am working towards being positive and loving that person. I am also working on loving myself more. There are plenty of things going on in my life that make this very challenging, but I now that by loving people and loving my self no matter what, can make me grow tremendously as a person. Love is the most powerful thing we can do when it comes to staying healthy and growing.

TIP: Write down types of people you hate. Now go tell those people you love them, that you are there for them, that whatever they are trying to overcome can be overcome with love.
